Setting up a 70s Party

Friday, October 9th, 2009

When you recall the 70s, you think of music, disco balls, polyester clothes and hair! The 70s encompassed all that and more. Here are some unique ideas for planning a 70s fancy dress theme party:

Saturday Night Live made its debut in 1975 on the airwaves. The characters involved are still difficult to beat. Invite your guests to come as their favorite Saturday Night Live character. Go ahead and set up your television playing episodes (you can rent the “best of” series) with the sound turned down. To expand the options for costumes, include any favorite 70s celebrities including TV characters, film sratrs and musicians. For example KISS, Characters from Grease or Saturday Night Fever, Charlie’s Angels, The Godfather, Rocky, anyone from Rocky Horror Picture Show, a Star Wars character, Kojak or The Incredible Hulk.

You choice of music should be selected to reflect the whole decade. There will be plenty of the BeeGees and disco tunes, but dont forget the more intellectual music to come out of the 70s including Janis Joplin, John Lennon and  Santana. At the end of your bash have a dancing competition. Start it as the decade did.At the start dancing was a type of anything goes but as time progressed dancing became an more precise science. So move on to the hustle and other line dances. Then, just as everyone is either getting their fill, from not being able to keep up – throw them a helping hand. Select a song everyone knows like the dance to – Y.M.C.A. by the Village People and watch everyone really enjoy themselves.

You can add an Abba flavor. Use and oldie 70’s backdrop where Abba music plays continuously.  Depending on your budget, you could go for the real bar and rent it out for your bash or decorate your house to look like a disco bar.

It’s easy if you have the budget that will enable you to book one bar.  All you need to do is ask the manager to set-up the place for an Abba Party.   You may also want to include posters Abba’s album to breathe the Abba’s presence into the place.

Take plenty of photos to turn into digital prints as party presents and souvenirs. Put a few anti-war posters up on your walls just to keep things unbiased and have fun. The 70s were a decade of growth of a nation and growth of the influence of popular culture. Rubik’s cubes were the puzzle solve.  Did you manage to do it?  Scatter a few around the place.

All the work you do in planning it will make it that much more memorable and successful.

70s costumes are varied

70s costumes that you may see in retailers are also sure to include characters from some of the big movies at the time. The most famous children’s film was undoubtedly Star Wars. The selection of different outfits that are available from that one movie is absolutely immense. It is still one of the most popular films ever made and thousands of people still love to dress up as Darth Vader, C3PO, Chewbacca or Luke Skywalker. Another great film from the period was Superman. It is very common to see at least one ‘man of steel’ at a fancy dress party.

If you have been invited to a party and you need to get yourself an outfit to wear, then 70s costumes are great fun. The selection to choose from really is very varied because it covers so many different areas.

The 1970s might have had some pretty awful clothes, accessories and shoes, but it was a lot of fun. It was a time of many different ideas and styles. People who grew up in that decade look back on its television, films, games and toys with a very great fondness.
