Setting up a 70s Party

When you recall the 70s, you think of music, disco balls, polyester clothes and hair! The 70s encompassed all that and more. Here are some unique ideas for planning a 70s fancy dress theme party:

Saturday Night Live made its debut in 1975 on the airwaves. The characters involved are still difficult to beat. Invite your guests to come as their favorite Saturday Night Live character. Go ahead and set up your television playing episodes (you can rent the “best of” series) with the sound turned down. To expand the options for costumes, include any favorite 70s celebrities including TV characters, film sratrs and musicians. For example KISS, Characters from Grease or Saturday Night Fever, Charlie’s Angels, The Godfather, Rocky, anyone from Rocky Horror Picture Show, a Star Wars character, Kojak or The Incredible Hulk.

You choice of music should be selected to reflect the whole decade. There will be plenty of the BeeGees and disco tunes, but dont forget the more intellectual music to come out of the 70s including Janis Joplin, John Lennon and  Santana. At the end of your bash have a dancing competition. Start it as the decade did.At the start dancing was a type of anything goes but as time progressed dancing became an more precise science. So move on to the hustle and other line dances. Then, just as everyone is either getting their fill, from not being able to keep up – throw them a helping hand. Select a song everyone knows like the dance to – Y.M.C.A. by the Village People and watch everyone really enjoy themselves.

You can add an Abba flavor. Use and oldie 70’s backdrop where Abba music plays continuously.  Depending on your budget, you could go for the real bar and rent it out for your bash or decorate your house to look like a disco bar.

It’s easy if you have the budget that will enable you to book one bar.  All you need to do is ask the manager to set-up the place for an Abba Party.   You may also want to include posters Abba’s album to breathe the Abba’s presence into the place.

Take plenty of photos to turn into digital prints as party presents and souvenirs. Put a few anti-war posters up on your walls just to keep things unbiased and have fun. The 70s were a decade of growth of a nation and growth of the influence of popular culture. Rubik’s cubes were the puzzle solve.  Did you manage to do it?  Scatter a few around the place.

All the work you do in planning it will make it that much more memorable and successful.

I thought the 60s were important but reading the list of things that happened and music and styles that came and went in the 70s has changed my mind. My next party will be 70s based.

I am in the retail trade and i often wonder about the overlap between regular main stream fashion and the styles that specialist outlets offer for celebrations like for example halloween. When i look at the images and the prices i am sure some of the outfits are well made and up to anything offered at the time. There is of course no way an independent fashion shop could offer halloween because it is still seen as party dress up - wear once and throw away. etc
So maybe i am safe for another few years

Telly Savalas the bald headed lollipop sucking cop was my memory of the 70s. Didnt quite fall for his smile since he appeared in the dirty dozen as a psychopath, but nevertheless brought something different to tv detective programs

Hmm……the 70s? That reminds me of anything Disco as that was big then. On the rock music side KISS was famous then. Cheech and Chong Cassettes and Movies were popular then. Moviewise, Star Wars and Jaws were a big hit then. Starsky and Hutch and Charlies Angels were among of the favorite tv shows around that time. It’s good to be bringing back good old memories.
