The elegance of 70s fancy dress

Monday, October 10th, 2011

Those who are interested in vintage attire, and most specifically 70s fancy dress, know that 70s clothing can incorporate both fun and elegance. While many consider 70s clothing to be centered around psychedelic patterns and exaggerated looks, 70s fancy dress was also highly classy and even elegant. For women, 70s fancy dress frequently included printed fabrics with longer hemlines or shorter dresses that were simple and chic. For men, it frequently included starchy materials, pressed collared shirts, and quality fabric pants and jeans.

The 70s was a time of experimentation in fashion and society, making it one of the most interesting and impressing eras in history. Most individuals identify 70s fashion as including colorful patterns and prints, soft and flexible materials, and colorful jeans and bell bottoms. However, 70s fancy dress also incorporated themes of simplicity and elegance, sometimes blending the two to create interesting and playful fashion designs. Many fancy dresses featured toned-down versions of the patterns and colors of casual clothing. Others employed clear-cut designs and stitching, with simple tones and blends of color. Women could find clothing that was both fashionable and functional, and could frequently dress the clothing up or down.

For men, 70s fancy dress was even more flexible. Casual dress often included fabric bell bottom pants and button-down shirts. While some of this clothing was highly colorful and patterned, much of it was actually relatively toned down and incorporated neutral tones. Thus, fancy dress could often include the same types of clothing with a jacket or overcoat. More professional or elegant dress could include a suit or more straight-cut clothing and a tie.

Depending on the type of event or the use of the clothing, 70s fancy dress could differ dramatically in style and design. For women, fancy dress most frequently included simple dresses and material

60s Fancy Dress Costumes

60s fancy dressThe 1960s are a unique decade for style and fashions that are still copied today both in everyday wear and in fun costumes for parties and Halloween occasions. This decade revives the vibrant colors and free style of its historical movements like the Civil Rights Movement and its pop culture ideals. From Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’s colorful costumes to 60s fancy dress costumes, this era was one of radical change and dress that are still widely popular even half a century later.

When considering what to wear to a 60s-themed party or Halloween event, there are a few different angles to consider. The early 60s style is obviously closer to that of the 1950s.

The music styles were still being influenced by American legends like Elvis Presley and Bill Hayley’s Comets. These styles will have more of the traditional tailored suits for men, slicked back hair, and easy disposition. Women in the earlier part of the decade modeled 60s fancy dress costumes with tight bodices and full A-line skirts, or maybe the more racy versions known as bombshell dresses in colorful, tropical prints. Hairstyles were still done in the popular beehive, up-do style.

As the decade progressed, pop culture switched more into the British rock scene, led mostly by The Beatles. The Fab Four always enjoyed creating unique costumes of their own that matched their albums’ themes, and this could be a great source of inspiration for 60s themed costumes today. As the Civil Rights Movement was gaining momentum, the elements of freedom of speech and of expression were also becoming more expressed in clothing. Women began wearing free-flowing skirts and long-sleeved blouses. The late 60s look very similar in style to the 70s with long hair on both men and women, worn down or with a simple headband or flowers. This was the age of the hippies, whose style originated from an earthy sense of being one with nature and being at peace in their own skin.

Thus, whether early or late 60s, these costumes offer a wide range of creative options for any party or occasion.

Toddlers and Tiaras the popular TV show in the US, may succeed in giving the show an even worse name. A preview shows 3 year old little star dressed as Julia Robert’s in Pretty Woman. And you will recall the role that Julia played in that film.

The 3 year old girl walks around in  PVC boots and tank top with matching tight mini skirt. This is onstage with a backdrop of a false Beverly Wilshire Hotel, where the film Pretty Woman took place.
So at the event the judges seemed to enjoy the event but many mums are not happy.

“I would never have my little girls do that.!’ one mother is reported as saying. “Us mums take big criticism for how we show our little girls and this type of thing gives us a bad name.”
Last week Toddler and Tiaras had many complainers call in as 4 year old Maddy from Tennessee, mimicked singer Dolly Parton with false large breasts on her chest.

Her mother Lindsay, was on NBC’s Today show. She was asked how she could do that to her daughter and  she replied “To some, it’s way over the top, but to me it’s just normal. The fake breasts and butt, it’s just a little extra to laugh at.”
