Ideas For a 70′s Fancy Dress Party

If you are thinking about having a themed party and you want something that is going to be good fun for everyone invited then how about a 70s fancy dress?

Sometimes when people organise a themed party it can actually be a bit limiting when it comes to choosing an outfit, but with a 70s fancy dress party this is certainly not going to be a problem. When you sit and think back to the 1970s (if you are old enough to remember them…) then it won’t be long before you realise just how many different styles of outfit that there are to choose from.

The 70s evloved thorugh many stages of look, starting with hippies dressed up in kaftans to the gold medallion on hairy chest look, tapering off with disco, made spectacular by the sound of The Bee Gees.

The decade actually went through quite a lot of changes by the time that it came to an end.
Particular styles characterise the decade so, when selecting from that era, bear them in mind.

Think of things that were firm favourites with people such as ‘bell-bottoms’, over-sized sunglasses and pork chop sideburns. Platform shoes are another very popular choice for 70s fancy dress as are the ‘glam rock’ outfits which were worn by the likes of Slade, The Sweet, Mud and David Bowie (when he was in his Ziggy Stardust phase). There are also some great wigs available to help you to complete your look. Make sure that you remember loud shirts with flared collars. You can get some really good ideas for costumes just by watching some old clips of singers or television programmes from the time. A final classic from the time that remains a favorite is the70s fancy dress is the Elvis Presley suit. Be prepared for a number of your guests to come dressed in this one.

Every time there is something on TV about the 70s or a rerun of an old series, I find myself inundated with requests to make up costumes either for kids or for adults parties. I am a costume maker so bring on more of these reruns !
