70s styles evolved over many interpretations. So you had on the one hand hippie’s styles from the previous decade and on the other, nostalgic outfits dating back as far as the 20′s and 30′s

Even the staunch and masculine male look was softened by the feminine influence in tight shirts and bright designs. Unisex clothing was baler to make an appearance due to this softening of stereotypes.

Although formally events still demanded the formal suit and ties, jeans started to come into their own with people wearing them every day wear.

Some styles caused local demonstrations in protest. fop example in the early 70s a group of truck drivers set up a campaign to re instate the style when it seemed to be challenged by the midi and the mxi, 2 of the newer cuts in fashion.

Other interpretations of style where when shorts were introduced with bib and braces, which enjoyed a degree of popularity.

Even in smaller local cities the 70s styles were very evident on the high street with hot pants, minis, and maxis and hats with wide brims were prevalent.

Longer dresses, inspired by the hippy era of the late sixties, were also in fashion, with paisley or floral patterns being popular.

Two styles which are strongly associated with the times were the flared trousers and the platform shoe. The flare began at the knee and reached a very generous width at the heel. The wait was a hipster which sat low on the waist. Altogether a striking design of the times.

Todays 70s fancy dress costumes are one of the few reminders of the lost era.

The Style Influences of the Seventies

Those of the 70s fashion era liked it vibrant, loud and noisy.”Don’t walk past without noticing me”, they seemed to say.All their activities of the time gave this message , even their dancing. Thus were born The Hustle, and the electric slide, to name just two. Vision for example, the in-crowd dressed in psychedelic printed shirts and trousers, dancing these new steps at a disco or party and you get an idea of the post 60′s vibe.

The flavour was towards extravagance and ostentation enhanced with psychedelic colours, perhaps inpired by the release of the beatles album cover showing these colour combinations.
Further trends were set by the use of PVC dancing boots due the iunfluence of Nancy Sinatra “these boots were made for walking” and the emergence of new pop group Abba.

Hair stlyes did not escape the revolution, with over-the-top Afros being hugely popular. If you were into rock, the you adopted the spikey hair style guaranteed to capture attention, whether approving or morely likely, not. But sending out this rebellious statement, was the message of the time.
For a non-rock look, men polished up their appearance with tailored clothes and a sharp look.
Many women tried the peasant look with long sleeved minis and stunning colorful printed tops.

70s Fancy Dress and the vibes of the time

It was the era of big hair and big pants. Loud colours dominated the scene and paisley patterns were all the rage. As the hippie period of clothes changed over the years in the sixties, the result was the clothes of the 1970s. A 70s themed party can be a lot of fun, especially when the fancy dress costumes people wear will reflect the 1970s’ sense of style.

Men and women’s 70s fancy dress costumes are brightly coloured. Polyester leisure suits, wide collars and ties, bell bottoms and knee high boots are just some of the ways people expressed their inner fashion model in the 70s. Women graced the fashion scene in wide broom skirts, go go skirts, flared pants and peasant blouses. Wide headbands topped off the outfits.

Your 70s-themed party will be a hit when you tell party goers to come dressed in 70s fancy dress costumes. Some of your friends may simply have to pull out things they actually wore in the 70s from the bottom of their closets. Other people can pull together pieces of 70s costumes from charity shops and perhaps their parents’ closets. The fun will be in finding the perfect pieces to put together for the best 70s outfit.

Your party invitees can accessorize with poofy-hair or sleek, long-haired wigs and coloured sunglasses. Other accessories may include go go boots, platform shoes, gold chains to go with men’s open-collared shirts and perhaps mocassins and a vest for the more relaxed hippies of the group.

You might have a disco dance contest at your party to get people really in the mood of the 70s. Disco balls hanging from your ceiling will cast squares of silver and other colours about the room. Turn up the music of your favourite disco or folk music band from the decade to get everyone ready to enjoy a night of dance and song.

Tease your hair into an afro the night of your 70s party. Put on as much loud jewellery as you can reasonably handle. Slip on your boots or platform shoes, and be ready to have the night of your life. Watch a few movies from the seventies to get in the proper mind set before the party starts. Your party will be fun and you can dance the night away with your friends.
