70s clothing

Monday, September 14th, 2009

You can set up your party using seventies fashion today, and blend it with modern looks. The aim is to have a modern-retro fashion look that does not turn your fancy dress outfit into something that looks like something from Charlie’s Angels set. There´s the peasant dresses, clunky heels, and high waisted bell bottom jeans as pieces of a puzzle for you to work with as you build your own particular retro fashion look.

Balancing your costume can by throwing on modern jewelry , or carry a new designer purse. The early 1970s were a carryover from the sloppy fashion of the late sixties. The decade ended however, with a flashy disco look that led into and started off, the sometimes bizarre 1980s

70s clothing has a unique place in American culture.  Starting from late 60’s hippie looks to the disco era, 70’s clothes were desinged to stand out and make a statment of the times.  The 1970s ran through from late ’60s fashion.  The hippies were still very present.  Tie dye shirts and worn jeans were the look .  Hip huggers and bell bottom jeans were likely to be personally customized by the person wearing them.  Adding patches and a variety of bleaching and tie dying techniques was popular.  Jean jackets were stylized with a variety of patches carrying whatever message the wearer felt like making.

Young women could be quite unpredictable in their fashion.  A girl wearing torn and faded jeans might next be seen in “hot pants” with long knee socks or a floral patterned granny dress, all on top of very high and clunky looking heels.  Women were asserting themselves in fashion and it was difficult to miss.  The mini skirt was still alive and well but “midi” dresses that came to the mid calf region and ankle length “maxi” dresses were also popular, especially in more formal situations.  You never knew what to expect.

The image of a Disco party conjures up rotating disco balls hanging from the ceiling, and  John Travolta doing the hustle in Saturday night fever!

Take a look at your  local costumes shop for disco theme party costumes. You could have guests search thier cupboards  to find some clothes with wide collars for men, and pants that were high on the waist and form fitting through the hips.  Women will recall cocktail length hems, with slits form fitting and glistening with sequins that  the light would reflect off.  Platform shoes were great for dancing and sparkly tights were a gret finishing touch. Perfected style, hair and makeup, and nothing was out of place!

Disco music was written for dancing to. If you’re setting up  a disco party, start assembling  the music and a piece of floor that can be used for dancing. Create a bar to go with the dance scene and use those fancy straws, fruit and mixes that shimmer .  You’ll have people dancing so work out a dance competition, the finger foods you provide need to have a bit of protein to give the dancers energy!

An easy choice of games is to play a game of 70’s trivia. There are several available including Trivial Pursuit 70’s edition. Play clips from 70’s TV shows or movies and competing teams guess first what movie/show the song was from.

70s party themes are popular and well liked by many; a perfect opportunity to dress up, relive an era and have a great time.
